Projects in thorac surgery

Mechanical heart support

A number of different technologies for short-term and long-term use have been evaluated experimentally in animal lab and implemented in the clinical setting. New techniques are included in this process and physiological studies carried out.

Studies of aortic valve disease

Different characteristics of the disease are studied with clinical methods. The ABU-study is a ongoing follow-up study of pts operated due to aortic stenosis and is especially focused on prognostic factors.

Measurements of myocardial perfusion and oxygen saturation

In cooperation with Profs Karin Wårdell and Tomas Strömberg, Dept of Biomedical Enginering.
Different projects are aiming at developing new methods for physiological studies in human hearts. A special aim is to find out techniques, which are clinically applicable especially for monitoring of myocardial ischemia after open heart surgery. Probes are constructed to allow concomitant assessment of perfusion and oxygen tension and also give correlates to metabolic activity of heart muscle.
