  • Master’s degree, 40 credits

Programme direction

Public Health Sciences seeks and analyses knowledge on determinants for health and also develops and evaluates methods to, efficiently, prevent disease and promote health. As the causes for health are multiple the scientific field of public health, and the study programme in this field, are interdisciplinary and involve disciplines such as social, political, behavioural, epidemiological, statistical and medical sciences.

The study programme has two main perspectives; one is scientific and one is more oriented towards a profession in public health work. In the scientific perspective the role/effect of living conditions on health are investigated in relation to policy, economy and culture, both historically and in our present time, locally and internationally.

Critical analysis of basic concepts is another central element.

In the professionally oriented programme foundations are laid for practical work in public health. This includes understanding of determinants of health in populations, groups and individuals and causes for health differences between groups. This forms the basis for studies of methods for intervention on different levels e.g. structural and behavioural and their evaluation.
